Virtual WAN Device (VWD) is an internet-enabled device with message relay capability. It relays Zigbee traffic between the Virtual WAN-enabled Communications Hub (VWCH) and the Virtual WAN Provider (VWP) over the consumer’s Wi-Fi internet connection. VWD uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to set up Wi-Fi and provides internet connectivity for access to cloud-based services and over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates.

The VWD also operates as an In-Home Display (IHD), supporting both credit and prepayment electricity and gas smart meters in accordance with the relevant SMETS specifications for the GB Smart Meter rollout. It displays household energy consumption information through a simple, easy-to-use interface.
