Samsung SmartThings | Transforming Standards Into Everyday Experiences

For over a decade, Samsung SmartThings has been at the forefront of the connected home, serving more than 425 million users worldwide. Through its Works with SmartThings (WWST) program, SmartThings partners with leading and innovative brands that have built thousands of WWST-certified devices, enabling a diverse set of high-quality experiences for Samsung SmartThings users. As a leader in developing Matter and bringing it to millions of SmartThings users, they continue to expand the possibilities of the smart home, making it easier for consumers to connect and control devices from multiple manufacturers within a single, unified platform.

Driving Interoperability Through Matter

SmartThings joined the Connectivity Standards Alliance (Alliance) in 2014 and stepped into a leadership role as a Board Member, driven by a commitment to shaping the future of smart home devices through interoperability. Recognizing the need for a unifying standard to simplify development for manufacturers and give consumers confidence that devices would work effortlessly across brands, SmartThings expanded its commitment in 2019 by becoming a founding Member of the Matter Working Group. As an active participant in Matter’s development, the company holds leadership positions within the Matter Working Group and collaborates with its hundreds of Members from across the industry to accelerate adoption. SmartThings has also invested in the Alliance Interoperability Testing Facility (Interop Lab), helping streamline the process for device manufacturers who can now achieve WWST certification through the interop lab, enabling them to better promote their new devices and experiences to millions of Samsung users..

Leading with Alliance Technologies

SmartThings supports a range of integration types, including hub-connected, cloud-connected, direct-connected, and mobile-connected, as well as various protocols, including Matter and Zigbee. Additionally, Samsung plans to bring support for Aliro, the Alliance’s upcoming solution for secure access control, to Galaxy phones and devices, positioning its ecosystem to stay ahead of emerging innovations. As one of the earliest supporters of Zigbee and an early contributor to the development of Matter, SmartThings continues to expand support as new standards evolve, positioning itself as a trusted foundation for the smart home.

Driving Impact Through Standards

Today, SmartThings supports 50 Matter device types through the 1.4 release, with additional support expanding with each subsequent update. Having consistently provided Matter updates within six months of publication, SmartThings empowers consumers to build and grow their smart homes, with a growing range of devices from lighting and locks to appliances and sensors, while enjoying seamless set-up and control with experiences that just work. This commitment has driven impressive scale, with more than 425 million users and over 1 billion Galaxy devices and Samsung appliances connected. As part of Samsung’s Hub Everywhere strategy millions of SmartThings hubs including those built into Samsung TVs, soundbars, appliances, and dedicated hardware, have made it simpler for people to set up, manage, and connect their devices through the Samsung SmartThings app. The launch of the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 in fall 2025 reinforces this commitment. This next-generation hub, supporting Matter, Thread, and Zigbee, has 70% faster CPU performance for reduced latency, and double the RAM capacity of the Aeotec Smart Home Hub to support more devices. It also has a smaller form factor with a wall-mount option and USB-C power.

Partnership in Action

SmartThings’ success with Matter is reflected in the partnerships and experience it enables, showcasing the tangible benefits of Matter in expanding its ecosystem. Their hubs now connect directly with Eve Systems’ Matter-over-Thread smart plugs, motion sensors, and contact sensors offering enhanced reliability through Thread, and compatibility across multiple brands. Additionally, the new Hue Bridge Pro is supported by SmartThings and the new Hue Matter bulbs can connect directly, providing a unified control experience alongside other IoT-enabled devices.

Similarly, collaborations with Yale locks demonstrate Matter’s potential for critical home security use cases, enabling secure, cross-platform control and supporting keyless access. These successful partnerships highlight Matter’s versatility across categories such as lighting, energy, and security, while demonstrating SmartThings’ role as a connector in bringing together devices, brands, and technologies into a single intuitive, unified experience.

The Value of Membership

Through its leadership roles in the Alliance and its early investment in open standards, such as Zigbee and Matter, SmartThings has been able to expand interoperability, simplify development for partners, and deliver streamlined experiences to millions of users worldwide. By collaborating within the Alliance and contributing to resources like the Interop Lab, SmartThings continues to advance its mission of unifying the smart home, empowering partners and consumers, and shaping a more open, interoperable future.
