Alliance Member Journey
Philips (former parent company of Signify) was a founding Member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (Alliance), then known as the Zigbee Alliance, in 2002. Since then, Signify has carried forward this history of leadership and innovation, playing a central role in shaping both the Zigbee and Matter standards and driving many of today’s connected devices. This long-standing commitment is further reflected in the leadership of Musa Unmehopa, Signify’s Head of Wireless Standards and Regulations, who currently serves as Chairman of the Alliance Board of Directors.
Powering the Next Generation of Smart Lighting
Signify launched Philips Hue, with Zigbee technology at its core, establishing a reliable and future-proof home connectivity network for its lights. Over the past 13 years, the Philips Hue ecosystem has grown from a single lightbulb to a portfolio of over 1,000 products, all capable of receiving software updates via the Zigbee network. This ability to update products over time has allowed Signify to continuously add new functionality and differentiate its offerings, including immersive Hue Entertainment streaming experiences and Hue MotionAware wireless sensing. By building on the strengths of the Zigbee standard, the company has been able to innovate while maintaining a consistent, high-performance platform for its expanding ecosystem.
Starting in 2023, Signify integrated Matter into both the Philips Hue Bridge and its WiZ Wi-Fi lighting products, ensuring customers benefit from effortless setup and compatibility with a growing number of platforms and devices. By adopting Matter early, Signify reinforced its commitment to interoperability and making smart lighting more accessible for consumers worldwide. In September 2025, they expanded this capability by introducing Matter-over-Thread in its newest generation of Hue bulbs, enabling them to connect over Thread, Zigbee, or Bluetooth.
Signify currently operates a fleet of 156 million IoT connected smart products, with the majority of these making use of Zigbee and Matter. By supporting multiple technologies in a single product line, it provides consumers with flexibility and choice in how they connect and control their lighting. This multi-protocol approach strengthens confidence, simplifies ecosystem integration, and reinforces Signify’s role as a leader in fostering unified experiences.
The Value of Alliance Membership
For Signify, the value of Alliance membership goes beyond technical alignment; it is a foundation for innovation and leadership in transforming the future of smart home technology.
“Zigbee and Matter are both foundational elements of the Philips Hue ecosystem, enabling seamless, reliable interoperability for our products. Building on these technologies, we’ve been able to delight consumers around the world with differentiated experiences and pursue our ambition to unlock the potential of light beyond illumination,” said George Yianni, CTO of Philips Hue.
Through its commitment to Alliance technologies, Signify has consistently demonstrated how global standards can enable scalability, foster consumer trust, and create brand-new experiences. The company continues to push the boundaries of what lighting can do, reinforcing its role as a leader not just in illumination but in advancing the connected world.
